Would you like to change the appearance of your teeth but are concerned that a smile makeover may require extensive dental work? veneersVeneers provide an easy way to transform your smile. Dr. Mahshid Mirghassemi and Dr. Robert Pitzi, your Danvers, MA dentists, explain how you can benefit from veneers.

What are veneers?

Veneers are tooth-shaped pieces of porcelain that fit over your teeth to conceal flaws. Since they're only attached to the fronts of your teeth, they offer a simple solution for cosmetic problems. Veneers are as thin as a fingernail and are often made from porcelain, a material that looks like your natural tooth enamel. They're used to change the color, size, shape or length of teeth.

How can veneers help me?

Veneers can be used to conceal a variety of cosmetic dental issues, including:

  • Slight gaps between teeth
  • Oddly shaped or uneven teeth
  • Discolorations due due to large fillings or root canal treatment
  • Staining caused by tetracycline use
  • Chipped, broken or eroded teeth
  • Teeth that are shorter than surrounding teeth
  • Stained teeth that are still dull after whitening. Dental veneers can be used on all of your teeth to provide uniform whitening.

What happens during the veneer process?

Your Danvers dentist must file the fronts of your teeth slightly to ensure a perfect fit for your new veneers. After your teeth are filed, they will make an impression of your mouth. The dental laboratory uses the impression to create your new custom-made veneers. You'll be fitted with temporary veneers before you leave the office and will return when your permanent veneers are ready.

At your next appointment, your dentist will remove the temporary veneers and check of the fit of your permanent veneers before using dental cement and a special curing light to attach them to your teeth. Caring for veneers is easy and can be accomplished by brushing and flossing as usual. It's a good idea to use a non-abrasive toothbrush, as abrasive types can scratch your veneers.
