In tooth bonding, tooth-colored dental resins and composites that are very close to the color of the teeth are used. The composite or ceramic material used for tooth bonding has improved drastically in recent years, hence, has made this technique accepted among dentists with very good results.
Tooth bonding techniques are used to:
- Close unattractive spaces
- Change the shape of teeth
- Change the color of teeth
- Repair chipped or broken teeth
- Cover up unsightly stains
Tooth bonding is usually completed in one visit. The dentist first determines the shade of the tooth and selects the composite material that matches the selected shade. Then, the tooth is prepared by removing very small amount of the tooth structure and cavities, etched and then the composite material is applied, contoured and hardened. At last, the bonded composite material is polished for a natural look. The bonded composite will last between four to eight years; however, similar to natural tooth can be stained by drinking coffee, tea or tobacco. However, it can be touched up and even bonded again if necessary.
