Bridges are prosthetic restorations that are used to replace missing teeth between two anchoring teeth. Two kinds of bridges removable and fixed bridges are available today.
Removable Bridges (a.k.a. partial dentures)
Removable partial bridges are used when there are still natural teeth left. The removable bridge uses the existing teeth and the soft tissue ridge as anchors to replace the missing teeth. The removable bridge is made from ceramic and acrylic material that results in a natural looking teeth. The foundation of the partial denture can be plastic or a combination of plastic and metal.
During the first visit, a thorough examination of your teeth, soft tissue (gums and cheeks), and remaining bone and surrounding anatomy is performed. Then, an impression of the location of the missing teeth as well all the surrounding teeth are taken to build a study cast. Because removable partial dentures use teeth and soft tissue for support, there might be a variety of treatment plans available. Dr. Mirghassemi will discuss these options with you to arrive at the best treatment plan for your case. The impression and the study cast with appropriate instructions are sent to the dental laboratory for fabrication of the bridge. Once the prosthetic is ready, it is fitted and 2 or 3 subsequent short visits might be necessary to fully adjust the partial bridge.
Fixed Bridges
Fixed bridges are more common and are made of ceramic. They are cemented in place, hence, are called fixed bridges.
A high level overview of the steps required for fixed bridges: The first step is to determine the anchoring teeth based on the number and location of the missing teeth. The anchoring teeth are prepared for crowns and an impression of the prepared and the place of the missing teeth is taken and sent to a dental laboratory for fabrication. Temporary bridge(s) are prepared and given to the patient for function and esthetic until the subsequent visit when the final bridge is delivered.
Bridges are an alternative to dental implants and if done correctly will add function and esthetic to your mouth for years to come.
